what to see + do in Bloomington, Indiana during the holidays (updated for 2023)
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Bloomington, Indiana is brimming with opportunities to spread Christmas cheer and
The holidays seemed to sneak up on me this year amidst life changes. Luckily for me, I’ve gotten to soak up a rather lovely Christmas atmosphere in Bloomington I, once again, was not expecting.
Rather than ruin that cheer by getting myself in a tizzy over gifts and Christmas dos, I thought I’d create this guide to help jumpstart the holiday spirit with the most festive spots in (and around) Bloomington. I’ve included my favourite places to grab a drink, activities you won’t want to miss, and the best places in Bloomington for lights. I’ve also put in a few events I’ll be attending, so let’s meet up before I bid farewell to the U.S. again.
check out the Canopy of Lights
The Square around the Monroe County Courthouse is filled with thousands of lights that get switched on every year by Santa Claus. Live music, festive food, and hot chocolate make The Square come to life and set the tone for the entire holiday season.

Monroe Lake Holiday Hiking Challenge
Monroe Lake’s trails beckon visitors to get off the couch and get a dose of fresh air, even when it’s chilly outside. 2021 is Monroe Lake’s 2nd Annual Holiday Hiking Challenge, promoting body movement and appreciation of the outdoor beauty that surrounds the area. You can learn more here.

visit The Lilly House
I did say some of these were not in Bloomington city! The Lilly House at Newfields in Indianapolis is a short drive away and makes the top of my list for places to see this holiday season if you’re in southern Indiana. Every inch of the house is decorated with presents, paper ornaments, Christmas trees, holiday cakes, and origami penguin figures. I was so pleased I visited during this time of year, because the house, which is already easy on the eyes by anyone’s measure, really felt extra spectacular.
