While Spanish cuisine might have a reputation for being meat-centric, there are plenty of options for authentic vegetarian tapas in Seville. The city, which is the largest in the Andalusia region, has a thriving food culture that caters to more than just its carnivorous residents.

While traditional Spanish tapas often center around meat and seafood, Seville has plenty of vegetarian options for those who prefer to go without. Classic vegetarian tapas like tortilla de patatas and pimientos de padron are waiting to be scarfed down in Santa Cruz neighbourhood, and innovative vegetarian twists can be tried in trendy areas of the city like Triana. There is deliciousness around every corner. Being vegetarian doesn’t mean you have to skip the delicacies of Seville’s tapas scene, and this post is here to prove it.

I was afraid that as a vegetarian visiting Seville, home of tapas, I’d miss out on the scrumptious Spanish cuisine the city offered. Instead, I found myself pleasantly surprised when I arrived in Seville only to find a number of vegetarian tapas on various restaurant menus. I never went hungry during my time in the southern Spanish city, despite it being a pretty meat-heavy destination. Similar to my time in South America, I realized that all it takes is a bit of research in the form of menu-reading to discover vegetarian tapas dishes that allowed me to experience local dining in Seville. This post serves as a guide to the best vegetarian tapas bars and eateries in Seville.

what are tapas ↴

Tapas are essentially small plates of food, similar to a bar snack but more elevated (and delicious). Tapas may be cold or hot, but they are almost always savoury. Tortilla Española (a Spanish omelette), croquetas de jamón (ham croquettes), calamares a la romana (fried squid rings), and patatas bravas (cooked potatoes) are among the most popular tapas. These can all be found on almost every menu at tapas bars across Seville. Tapas are a great snack or appetizer before restaurants open and begin serving the last meal of the day. The best part of tapas is that you get to try a variety of dishes. It’s also a great way to share food with friends.

The concept of tapas is said to have originated back in the 13th century when King Alfonso X ate small morsels of food with his wine. Other lore says that tapas come from farmers who ate small snacks throughout the day while working in the fields. Whatever the truth may be, today tapas are the heart and soul of food culture in Seville.

tips for eating tapas like a local ↴

Casual diners in Seville will want to spend their evenings soaking up the warm temperatures and eating their fill of tapas. If you don’t want to look like a tourist, here are some quick tips for eating tapas like a local.

  • Bars tend to serve food from 1 PM through to 4 PM, and then they break before reopening from 8 PM to 11.30 PM (or midnight)

  • If you’re standing, tradition dictates that you order at the bar.

  • Order your drinks first.

  • Eat slowly. The Spanish relish the idea of a leisurely meal where every bite of tapas is meant to be enjoyed.

  • Pay at the end of your meal either at the bar or with your wait staff

Duo Tapas

Spending date night in Seville just got a whole lot sexier thanks to the dimly lit Duo Tapas bar and restaurant. The interior of Duo Tapas makes enjoying tapas here feel like an intimate experience; one where you wish the night would linger on forever. The service at Duo Tapas is superb. Not only did the staff help us decide what was best off the menu, but they were also extremely quick with service.

Milk Away

Full disclosure: Milk Away is not exactly a tapas bar. It is, however, one of the best places in Seville for salads, paninis, and sandwiches. They also do açai bowls, but I never gave them a go. The staff at Milk Away were extra friendly, which always feels nice when you’re exploring a new place. My advice would be to grab Milk Away to go, using your own reusable takeaway containers, and take it to one of Seville’s many parks to enjoy the sunshine capital of Europe!

La Chunga

This little tapas bar is far from the tourist path, earning it a major “plus” in my book. La Chunga offers several vegetarian options and locals love this place thanks to its great service, fun environment and undoubtedly delicious food. Try the zucchini-parmesan risotto if you go and you will not be let down!

Habanita

Habanita is an upscale tapas restaurant that serves a bevy of vegetarian tapas options including feta and mint samosas, crudités with hummus, and vegetarian habanita aubergine with rice and courgettes. As mentioned, this is a high-market kind of place, so it is best to make a reservation if you want to get a table and enjoy all the meatless goodies Habanita offers its patrons.

El Paladar

El Paladar is not a fully vegetarian eatery, however, there is a completely vegetarian menu available with options for those non-carnivorous. little tapas bar offers a completely vegetarian menu. The friendly staff provides excellent service and is more than happy to make accommodations for dietary restrictions. Get there especially early to grab a good table!

Condendê

The tapas at Condendê aren’t your typical, traditional Spanish snacks, but they are powerfully delicious and very affordable. We had the veggie samosas, vegetable wontons, and pakora. All were yum and the portions were bigger than the other places listed in this post. There is limited seating, since Condendê is only a stall in a food market hall. Get there early or prepare to stand while you eat.

Alameda Rock

This tapas bar is known for its espinaca con garbanzos (spinach with chickpeas) being some of the best you can find in Seville. The vegetarian options are limited, but well-priced, and we were the only foreigners to come through.

Gaia Centro Ecológico

This beautiful spot for tapas in Seville is delicious and 100% meat-free! The owners of Gaia Centro Ecologico are super passionate about sustainable living through a vegetarian and plant-based diet. Not only is the food they serve yummy, they have a shop full of organic products, so make sure you check the place out in its entirety.

Veganitessan

The tapas (and desserts) at Veganitessan are well-priced, extra yummy, and centrally located in the “El Arenal” market. If you’re on the hunt for something more substantial than tapas, they also serve vegan burgers here! A note to make: Veganitessan is open unusually early by Spanish standards, so this makes a good place for pre-dinner tapas.
