Looking for the best restaurants in Udaipur? Your search ends here with my ultimate guide to the best places to eat in Udaipur. I’ve included restaurants for every budget, and include vegan and gluten-free options!

Known as “The Venice of the East” and widely regarded as the most romantic city in the country, Udaipur offers a quieter, softer side of India to all who visit. Surprisingly, Udaipur has abundant street eats, lakeside restaurants, and contemporary dining options. I spent two weeks in Udaipur eating my way through its best restaurants and discovering hidden foodie treasures, and I can honestly say Udaipur's food scene offers it all.

I still think about the many Rajasthani curries, massive dosas, and vegan breakfast bowls I consumed during our two weeks in Udaipur. What surprised me most about Udaipur was the variety of cuisine available. I found everything I could want in Udaipur, including pizzas, smoothie bowls, and thali sets. There were vegan-friendly eateries and even gluten-free options available. In this guide, I’ll share my most flavorful food finds, from parathas to Indian fried eggs. Read on to explore the best places to eat in Udaipur!

foods to try in Udaipur ↴

As a giant country with rich cultures, religions, and climates, the food in India varies greatly. Indian cuisine is as diverse as each of its many states. Here are some classic Indian dishes you can find in Udaipur that you should definitely try!

  • paratha | Dough is cooked in layers, often filled with potato and masala (spices).

  • dosa | A South Indian dish consisting of a thin “pancake” made from fermented batter of lentils and ghee. A dosa is most often served with sambar and chutney.

  • thali | A meal made of various dishes (often curries, dal, chapati, papad, and chutney) that is served on a round platter.

  • Indian fried egg | This isn’t exactly a classic, but it is on menus throughout Udaipur and makes for a quick and easy breakfast. An egg that’s been fried in ghee and sprinkled with cheese, onions, and cilantro (coriander) is served on top of toast.

15 best restaurants in Udaipur ↴

Jheel’s Ginger Coffee Bar & Bakery

Along windy lanes and amongst the city’s temple sits Jheel’s, a local bakery and restaurant with rooftop and lakeside seating. Jheel’s is a no-frills café known for its decadent milkshakes, topped with crushed chocolate bars. The rich shakes pair nicely with Jheel’s views of Lake Pichola.

Dave Restaurant

Dave Restaurant can be found close to the city’s clock tower. Here, you’ll find giant vegetable samosas being fried up the traditional way— inside a massive, aged kadai (rounded metal pan).

Pap’s Juices

No trip to Udaipur is complete without a stop at Pap’s for the famous muesli. It’s remarkably cheap, making it a staple breakfast of backpackers. Pap’s heaping portions of hot porridge topped with pomegranate seeds, various nuts, and sliced fruits are filling and affordable. There is a vegan-friendly menu available for those with dietary requests.

Café Boho

Up a few flights of windy, narrow stairs you’ll find a rooftop café that doubles as a great co-working space. The rooftop of the café is so high up that it offers a reprieve from the intense Indian heat in the form of a light breeze. I recommend grabbing an iced coffee and enjoying some brunch here. The waffles topped with honey are a great way to fuel up before a day of exploring.

Brew Villa

Breakfast is served all day at Brew Villa. This standard café is down the road from Gangour Ghat, near Edelweiss Café. It’s an affordable place for a hearty breakfast or a pressed sandwich with fries for lunch. If you want something a little heavier, try their pasta plates! The portions are fantastic value for money. I loved the colorful map of the city handpainted on the café’s walls.

Shreenath Masala Dosa

Up a side street near the palace is Shreenath Masala Dosa, an unassuming eatery that serves customers dosas the size of your head. Fans buzz as they rotate cool air from one side of the neon green restaurant to the other. Dosas are made fresh to order, served on large silver trays accompanied by a number of sauces, chutneys, and condiments. While the dosas are the star of the menu here, they aren’t the only thing you can order. Shreenath is known for serving “magic lassi.” Magic Lassi, which is often referred to as Bhang Lassi, is essentially a weed milkshake. Lassi is infused with the seeds and leaves of the cannabis plant, and the concoction is especially strong for first-time consumers. Drink with caution, and keep your wits about you!

By the Bamboo

I stumbled upon By the Bamboo and immediately felt like I’d discovered a hidden gem. Bamboo shoots created a fence around the little garden restaurant near some of the city’s lesser-visited temples. Servers wearing all white waited on us with incredible attentiveness, though Luke and I were admittedly the only diners there that night. I had a garlic naan and a spicy alo gobi curry. The twinkly lights draped along the bamboo fence flicked on as the sun was setting, giving By the Bamboo a romantic ambiance.

Edelweiss Café

Edelweiss Café is a German bakery located just steps from Ghanghar Ghat. The café, with its yellow-painted interiors and brown tile floors, isn’t anything spectacular to look at. However, the food menu here offers a touch of everything from Indian dishes to pizzas. My favorite items from Edelweiss were the bakery treats. I panic-ordered the Apple Crumble Pie and loved every cinnamon-filled bite. I would recommend grabbing a cool beverage here in the evening before heading to the Dharohar Cultural Show.

Mavi Café

Mavi is a must-try for vegans visiting Udaipur! Everything on the menu at Mavi is either vegan already or can be made vegan to order. Mavi is close to Jagdish Temple, one of the most famous in Udaipur. I recommend grabbing breakfast at Mavi Café before stopping by the temple early in the morning. Try their peanut butter toast; it comes with granola flakes and fresh sliced strawberries on top! Mavi’s fresh smoothie bowls are a refreshing way to start the day too. Mine came topped with kiwi fruits, pumpkin seeds, and a heap of coconut shavings. There is seating inside the café and a few alfresco tables at the front of the place.

Little Prince

Located on the still waters of Udaipur, Little Prince was by far and away our favorite little waterside eatery in the sleepy city. Little Prince is owned by the family who ran the homestay Luke and I stayed at, meaning we got complimentary breakfast here every morning. It turned out to be serendipitous because Little Prince was 12/10 delicious. We had multiple breakfasts, lunches, and dinners here throughout our 2-week Udaipur adventure. Luke and I got to know the staff, spending our mornings chatting with them while they made our breakfasts. All the food here is made fresh to order, like most of the other restaurants in Udaipur. Their curries are spicy, and their pizza is a treat if you need a taste of Western classics.

Yummy Yoga

This rooftop restaurant took me by surprise. As we hiked up floor after floor of stairs to the dining area, we were greeted by tables topped with blue cloths. The views from the roof of Yummy Yoga made the trek to the top completely worth the effort. You can see the lake and the city’s palace across the water. I devoured a traditional thali set here so good I returned two nights later and ordered the same thing!

Ambrai Restaurant

One of the top restaurants in Udaipur is located at the Amet Haveli, regarded as one of the most romantic hotels in the city. The views of Lake Pichola, Gangour Ghat, and the city’s mammoth palace are unbeatable. Ambrai Restaurant serves a variety of dishes from around India, as well as Western food and Chinese cuisine. Do not miss the Mughlai starters and the Rajasthani curries. The portions are quite good, but the food is a bit overpriced compared to other restaurants in the area. You are definitely paying for the atmosphere and location. Make a reservation— this place books up!

Khamma Ghani Restaurant

Khamma Ghani is another 5-star lakeside restaurant you can’t miss in Udaipur. This upscale eatery’s authentic Rajasthani dishes are made the traditional way, so you can be sure you’re getting an authentic taste of local cuisines. I highly recommend visiting at golden hour, right before the sun sets over Rang Sagar Lake. If you only have the budget for one upscale meal in Udaipur, I recommend Khamma in terms of actual taste. Ambrai’s setting is a tiny bit more romantic, but I thought the food at Khamma Ghani was better. During my two weeks in Udaipur, one of my favorite vegetarian meals was at Khamma Ghani. They also had beautiful-looking cocktails, though I didn’t try them myself.

Upré by 1559 AD

Upré has one of the most gorgeous views of Udaipur’s City Palace. Located in the Lake Pichola Hotel, one of the city’s stunning heritage hotels, Upré is a romantic restaurant with elegant decor and a menu brimming with international dishes. You’ll often see couples indulging in multi-course meals by the flicker of candlelight. The hospitality is top-notch, but it’s the remarkably intimate atmosphere that makes Upré a must-try.

Millets of Mewar

Four friends established Millets of Mewar to bring healthier, lighter food options to Udaipur. The friends-turned-owners believe that food is medicine for our bodies and that food should be made with the environment in mind. It’s one of Udaipur’s first health-centered restaurants. Millets’ menu includes gluten-free and vegan options made with raw ingredients and organic produce.

cooking classes in Udaipur ↴

Mamta Cooking School in Udaipur is considered one of the best cooking classes available in Udaipur, and there are plenty of them! It’s got some of the best reviews and a high rating from previous cooking school graduates. However, I opted for Lucky Cooking School, which offers homestyle cooking classes, because Luke and I also attended an art class by the same host. The cooking class at Lucky lasts 3 to 4 hours, and you make enough traditional Rajasthani curry and samosas to feed an army. I highly recommend contacting them via WhatsApp to book a class.
