quick Bangkok travel tips↴

Before you head out to explore Bangkok, there are a few essential travel tips that can help you have the ultimate coffee-fueled adventures.

  • Basic Thai phrases | While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Thai phrases can go a long way in fostering connections and showing respect.

    "thank you" - ขอบคุณ (K̄hxbkhuṇ)

    "sorry" - ขอโทษ (K̄hxthos̄ʹ)

    “hello” - สวัสดี (S̄wạs̄dī)

  • SIM cards | You can purchase a 4G SIM Card from one of the many kiosks int the arrival terminal of the airport. I recommend the True Move SIM card that has great 4G/5G data plans for travelers an is cheaper than the other popular SIM card option (AIS).

  • Getting around Bangkok | Bangkok has a perfectly decent public transportation system comprised of buses, metro lines (The Skytrain/BTS), and riverboats (Chao Phraya Express) are convenient, affordable, and offer a unique perspective of the city. If you opt for a tuk-tuk or a taxi, be sure to negotiate prices before hopping into the vehicle. Always opt for metered taxis or agree on a fare beforehand to avoid misunderstandings.

coffee to try in Thailand ↴

Thailand is relatively new to the coffee scene. Coffee is believed to have been introduced to Thailand in the 19th century, but it wasn’t until much later that Thailand took coffee “seriously”. In the1960s and 70s, northern Thai communities grew opium poppies as cash crops. In an attempt to provide an alternative source of income, King Bhumibol Adulyadej initiated a number of coffee projects throughout the region. Thailand became an exporter of coffee in 1976. Today, Thailand is slowly becoming one of Asia’s leading coffee producers, alongside Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos, India, and Indonesia.

When it comes to coffee variations, Thailand offers a delightful array of flavors and brewing styles that are sure to captivate coffee lovers around the world. From the renowned Thai iced coffee, locally known as "Oliang," with its bold and sweet combination of coffee, condensed milk, and spices, to the smooth and aromatic "Kafae Boran," a traditional Thai-style coffee brewed using a cloth bag filter.

Thailand is famous for its unique and fragrant "Doi Chang" coffee, which is produced in the high-altitude mountains, while the southern provinces offer a taste of "Kopi Kao," a rich and bold Malaysian-style coffee. You can try both blends in Bangkok from both cafés and roadside coffee stands.

20 of the best cafés in Bangkok ↴

Bluetamp Café

Travelers can expect to indulge in Antipodean-style brunch and specialty coffee at Bluetamp Café, a rustic coffee house set amongst palm leaves and upcycled wooden furnishings. At Bluetamp, you can enjoy such breakfast classics as eggs benedict, avocado toast, and vegetarian eggs florentine. Alongside the delicious barista-style coffee and fabulous brunch options is a friendly staff who can guide you through food and beverage options.

📍56 Soi Lat Phrao 73, Saphansong, Wang Thonglang

Broccoli Revolution

Exposed brick and high ceilings create an industrial café space for Broccoli Revolution, Bangkok’s premier health food and coffee house. There are multiple Broccoli Revolution locations throughout Bangkok, but the flagship Broccoli Revolution café lies just steps away from the BTS (public transportation system), and it’s beautiful. The coffee here is good, but it’s the plant-based food that truly shines. Khao Mun Jackfruit is a delightful take on the Thai classic, and their plant-based burger patty is made from broccoli, black and white quinoa, and bread crumbs. If you’re here for more “café fare” consider trying one of their satiating smoothie bowls or their signature tofu scramble with “carrot bacon”!

📍899 Sukhumvit Road, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana

Charlotte Doughnuts

Stepping into Charlotte Doughnuts’ tiny shop is like walking among the chic cafés of Paris. And, while it’s probably not the place to go for the best coffee in Bangkok, Charlotte Doughnuts is well worth a visit for the photo op. Their iced coffee is decent enough, especially when washed down with one of Charlotte’s signature doughnuts. If you’re hoping to grab a seat outside of Charlotte’s storefront, you’ll want to either arrive early or must be willing to be patient.

📍12 33 Sukhumvit 33 Alley, แขวง วัฒนา Watthana

Featherstone Bistro

For a truly “magical” experience, try the coffee at Featherstone Bistro, a mythical café and lifestyle shop where creative cuisine and innovative beverages collide. Many of their drinks are served in tiny bottles for you to pour over ice or into goblets, adding a sense of mysticism to the café experience. Featherstone’s signature drink is their cold-brewed ice cube latte, a concept similar to Espresso Station’s ice-cude coffee in Hoi An, Vietnam., whereby you pour milk over coffee that has been frozen into ice cubes. Slowly, the milk melts the coffee ice cubes to create a beautiful espresso beverage.

📍60 Ekkamai 12 Alley, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana

Fill in the Blank

If you have a sweet tooth, Fill in the Blank is a cozy café hidden away near Ekkamai BTS Station. The café is one of the homiest that I’ve found in Bangkok, complete with a small back garden area, cushions made of upcycled burlap sacks, and mismatched tables scattered across its small space. This would be a lovely place to co-work since they do have a food menu (albeit limited) and free WiFi. Fill in the Blank’s signature drink is their Salted Caramel Blondie over Whipped Cream Lattee, a real mouthful of a name for a real mouthful of a drink.

📍28/10 Sukhumvit 61, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana

Floral Café at Napasorn

If you’re looking for an Instagram-worthy café that actually sells decent coffee, Floral Café at Napasorn should be on your radar. Mismatched coffee mugs hang from the ceiling as you move through the café’s entryway. Making your way through the café space, you’ll find yourself surrounded by shabby-chic-style decorations with rustic furnishings. It has a striking feature wall of floor-to-ceiling pampas grass that brings the café to life with its textures. Aside from the pretty design details, Floral’s coffee is actually reasonably good. Indulge in a foamy cappuccino on a rainy Bangkok day, or opt for an iced latte to beat the city’s heat. No matter what your coffee preference, you’ll find something delightful on the menu here to wash down the rich tiramisu or various cheesecake adaptations.

📍67 Chakkraphet Rd, Wang Burapha Phirom, Phra Nakhon

Gallery Coffee Drip

Inside Bangkok’s famous Art and Culture Center lies Gallery Coffee Drip complete with a counter spattered with drip coffee equipment. Chemex, Aeropress, and other various immersion and pourover methods make Gallery a coffee lover’s paradise. Their counter cabinet is filled with pastries and cakes to accompany the caffeine fix of your choice. While you sip, look up! Gallery’s roof has a mesmerizing honeycomb design reminiscent of Seville’s Metropol Parasol.

📍BACC Building – 939 Rama I Road, Wang Mai, Pathum Wan District

HANDS + HEART COFFEE ROASTERS

Hands and Heart Coffee Roasters’ minimalist all-white interiors allow the brand’s exceptional coffee blends to stand out. Run by the winners of the Thailand National Brewers Cup Championship 2019, Hands and Heart serves expertly brewed Aeropress, Chemex, and drip method coffee from beans that have been hand-ground. The owners source single-origin beans from top roasters around the world. The coffee speaks for itself, but the presentation adds an extra layer of “wow factor”. White coffee is served in black cups, and black coffee is served in white cups.

📍155 ซ. ปรีดี พนมยงค์ 25 Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana

Herringbone

This beautiful café is located down a quiet road in an otherwise busy Bangkok neighbourhood. Herringbone’s interiors are modern whilst remaining welcoming and warm— truly a place you’d like to order brunch, sit, and enjoy it over a long conversation with friends. Herringbone’s shaded patio is impossibly pretty and remarkably quiet.

📍26, 1 Sukhumvit 53 Alley, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana

Kaizen Coffee

Walk through the doors of Kaizen Coffee and your senses will be greeted with a chic all-white interior and infinity-edged cabinetry. This is the modern café in Bangkok for third-wave coffee culture enthusiasts. Expats and young locals converge in Kaizen’s Japanese-inspired space, eagerly fueling their remote work projects and conversations with the café’s signature nitro cold brew and barista-style coffee on par with what you’d find in the best cafés throughout Melbourne. And, it makes sense that the coffee’s quality matches Australia’s because the two siblings who own Kaizen Coffee learned their methods in Australia before bringing it over to Thailand.

📍888 6-7 Ekkamai Rd, Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana

Luka Café

Luka Café is the kind of café you’d frequent if it were your local. Housed in a 50s shophouse, Luka is owned by four siblings who recently knocked down its walls and transformed the space over four floors so that it feels like the café is always buzzing with friends meeting up, remote workers being productive, and locals popping in for their morning treats. The food menu here veers all over the place, from filling burritos to refreshing salads, but it’s all done quite well. Every dish is made by hand, from scratch with locally-sourced ingredients. The coffee served at Luka, even more than the food, is worthy of praise. Roasted to perfection and meticulously poured, Luka’s coffee is not to be missed. In case I haven’t sold Luka’s to you yet, its interiors are spectacular, with clean concrete and wooden design elements.

📍64 3 Pan Rd, Silom, Bang Rak

Mana Craft

Mana Craft ticks every box for me. Aesthetic interiors. Friendly staff. A small but succinct menu. Well-located just a short walk from Chinatown. We went in the early morning hours, just as the café was opening, and their credit card machine hadn’t quite started working yet, so we had to find an ATM to pay with cash. I think this was a once-off, but if you’re visiting early maybe bring cash with you just in case.

📍Khao Lam Rd, Khwaeng Talat Noi, Khet Samphanthawong

(Not Just) Another Cup

English breakfast, Australian breakfast, Thai breakfast, and even breakfast burritos— (Not Just) Another Cup serves them all. This gorgeous café serves delicious brunch and breakfast options that vary widely from smothered French toast and acai bowls to Western omelets and Moroccan eggs. You can enjoy either coffee or green smoothies here, and while their signature “Dirty Coffee” is a fan favorite, I recommend trying the Piccolo Latte or the Hot Thai Tea.

📍75/1 Sathon Soi 10, Silom, Bang Rak

Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roaster

True coffee fans will love Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roaster. The coffee quality and customer service are phenomenal. For me, it’s the time the staff put into helping you find the perfect blend to match your palette. Pacamara’s coffee experts will match your taste preferences to a coffee bean blend with a suitable depth, body, and flavor for you. Their Bangkok café is beautifully designed, as are their sister cafés in Singapore and Chiang Mai.

📍185 Upper Thomson Rd, Singapore 574333

Rise Coffee

Rise Coffee is relatively new to Bangkok’s coffee scene having launched its inaugural store and roasting lab in 2021. Set amongst luxury residential buildings and high-end office spaces, Rise’s immaculate white interiors are branded from top to bottom. The café space is divided into two areas: a café area and roasting lab. While the café didn’t exactly scream “cozy” to me, I feel like it would have been a good spot for getting work done since there were minimal distractions. I recommend grabbing yourself a pourover and enjoying the sterile work-like environment!

📍888 อาคารมหาทุนพลาซ่า ชั้น 1 ยูนิต 1, Phloen Chit Rd, Lumphini, Pathum Wan

Roots Coffee

Roots was created as a coffee-centered community hub in Bangkok, and it lives up to its initial vision. There are multiple café locations throughout Bangkok, but my favourite is set inside The Commons, a contemporary shopping complex and food court in the Thonglor District of the city. Roots serves the highest-quality coffee, sourced locally across Thailand. You can purchase a bag of coffee to take home with you as a souvenir— a little taste of Thailand to remember.

📍 THE COMMONS – Market Floor – Thonglor Rd, Klongtan Nue Watthana

Toby's on Sukhumvit 38

Toby’s bright and airy café has a reputation for being one of the best brunch spots in Bangkok. It’s one of my top choices for coffee catch-ups in Bangkok. The café’s large brunch platters pair perfectly with its expertly roasted espresso. The open floor plan is the ideal space to sip away an afternoon or catch up with friends, and the perfected playlist sets the tone as the background soundtrack to your brunch.

📍 Sukhumvit 38

Shaloba Boutique Coffee

You can delight in slow-drip Shaloba Boutique Coffee at either Salil Journey Riverside or Baantukdin Hotel. Everything about Shaloba is beautiful, from the interiors to the café’s overarching philosophy. Shaloba’s ethos is that there is pleasure to be found in mindful, ceremonious coffee drinking. Less rushing, more conversations over a cappuccino. Their bestseller and menu standout is the “Sand Coffee” which is brewed over hot sand using a Turkish method. There is a menu of small bites, perfect for snacking and sharing, and all the food I tried was delicious. However, it’s the serene setting and expertly crafted coffee that makes Shaloba standout.

📍2052/7-9 ชั้น 2 โรงแรมสลิล ริเวอร์ไซด์ Charoen Krung 72/1, Wat Phraya Krai, Bang Kho Laem

Sretsis Parlour Café

After over a decade in fashion, three sisters opened Sretsis Parlour Café to bring lavish desserts and incredibly intricate latte art to Bangkok. Sretsis is wallpapered with floral motifs, and filled with Marie Antoinette-style cakes. The café feels feminine and flirty, which makes it the perfect place for a coffee date with your best gal pals.

📍 Central Embassy, Level 2 Lumphini, Pathum Wan District

Unfinished Coffee Roaster

The Ladprao neighborhood in Bangkok has transformed into a hub for hip cafés and trendy restaurants. Unfinished Coffee Roaster is hidden within Ladprao’s streets in a contemporary building with walls that looks half-built and interiors decorated with natural materials. The café has an extensive coffee menu that includes signature items like the “Unfinished ES-YEN” (Thai-style coffee made with espresso, cold milk, and topped with whipping cream), and the cocktail-looking Genmai Tea Shake served with edible florals on top.

📍อันฟินิช 2 Lat Phrao Wang Hin 46 Alley, Khwaeng Lat Phrao, Lat Phrao

other notable Bangkok cafés ↴

There are a number of cafés I have either yet to make it to (noted with an asterisk*) or that I have been to that didn’t “do it for me” in terms of coffee or food offerings. For instance, The Cassette Coffee Bar had a very cool setting, but the options were extremely limited and the focus was less on coffee and more on fruity iced drinks.

  • The Cassette Coffee Bar | average coffee served in a tiny, millennial pink bar that’s incredibly Wes Anderson-esque inside

  • *Grow Coffee Roaster | a café that serves impeccably stylish coffee concoctions housed inside an Instagrammable space

  • *Aeb Chong Specialty Coffee | beautiful coffee stand near the very affluent Soi Som Kid neighborhood
